Independent collectors and artists have gained a great deal from the opportunity to find one another in this way.  For collectors, online auction sites are especially an opportunity to seek pieces by “undiscovered” artists, which can enhance their collections for a very reasonable price.  For artists, they can avoid gallery fees, and sell their pieces lower as a result, while still making a profit.

There are some negative aspects to this venue, however.   Even a knowledgeable collector can be swindled if the excitement of finding a rare piece overcomes common sense.  Online auction sites usually have clear rules against counterfeit merchandise and fraud, but with millions of individuals participating in as many independent transactions, it is impossible to prevent these types of sales from taking place.  Legal recourse may be taken after the fact, but is a drain on money and may take years to resolve.  Buyers should request all proofs of authenticity before making a purchase.
